Cast and Crew
Calum Howard is a musician, composer and performer from Northumberland – currently based in Newcastle upon Tyne. He has toured across the world with numerous bands including Smoove and Turrell, Beth Jeans Houghton, and Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra – playing several live radio sessions on BBC 6 Music, as well as performing on Later with Jools Holland. He also toured Europe throughout 2016 with the critically acclaimed ‘supergroup’ Minor Victories, comprised of members of Slowdive, Mogwai and Editors. He starred in the 2015 New Writing North production of Man on the Moon and is excited to be involved again in Do Not Enter The Monster Zoo. Calum is a member of the electronic music collective Grey Tapes, and continues to remix bands and produce music under his own alias Jacana.
Joe teaches and performs across the North East, working with all ages and demographics, particularly with children and young people. Previously working on many family performances for Sage Gateshead and New Writing North’s The Worst Princess, Joe brings humour and technical know-how to all the projects he works on. Joe recently stepped down after five years as Musical Director of Stockton Silver Singers choir and plays as a session guitarist as well as composing and performing with Prog-folk outfit Fika.
Rachel is as pleased as punch to be working with Ruth and the team at New Writing North again this year; glad to be back in the North East after living and working for nine months being her own boss in Berlin at the London International School for Performing Arts. You can’t beat a good story, especially one with colourful pictures that move and make sounds! Rachel’s favourite Monster is the Turquoise one, because that’s her favourite colour. She’d go on holiday with the Purple Gurps and keep Squirgals in her car.
Originally from Yorkshire, Zoe has been based in the North East for 32 years. She is thrilled to be working with New writing North and this marvellous monster team. In fact, she used to perform with a company called Monster Productions who specialised in shows for the under 7’s and during this time built up a character repertoire of animals, insects, a cabbage, a terrible grump, a dragon to name but a few.
Zoe has worked with Live Theatre, Open Clasp, Northern Stage, November Club, Odd Man out, Greyscale, The Customs House. Outside the region, Northern Broadsides, Bolton Octagon, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Lancaster Dukes. Zoe also plays with band kissed and is one half of Doom and Blooms Story Emporium. TV credits include Tracy Beaker, Emmerdale, The Royal, Byker Grove.
Meet the Crew
Adaptor: Stacey Sampson
Stacey Sampson is a writer and theatre maker specialising in collaborative projects, often with young people at their heart. She often makes work alongside communities in a wide variety of settings including arts centres, schools, libraries, young offender programmes and homelessness organisations. Stacey is a recent graduate from the Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme and was chosen as a ‘Next Generation Artist’ to represent the UK at the international ASSITEJ conference (about making work for children.) In 2015 she completed a year-long fellowship with the BBC and tutti frutti, mentored by Mike Kenny. Stacey’s fiction for children has won several awards including the Mslexia Novel Competition and a Northern Writers’ Awards. She lives in Sheffield and has two small sons who both can’t wait to visit Monster Zoo!
Director: Ruth Johnson
Ruth creates work for young people and their families for a range of companies across the North East and is thrilled to be working with New Writing North again to bring this book to the stage. Having directed The Worst Princess, Man on the Moon and Hey, Presto! she is delighted to be back on tour with this work revisiting venues who have been on the whole journey with us and making new connections.
Designer: Andy Stephenson
After leaving Newcastle College in 1999, Andy has been working throughout the North East as a stage manager and a designer. He worked at Northern Stage for over a decade and designed some of the under 6s shows such as The prince and Penguin, Thumbelina and Tattercoats. Andy has worked with Third Angle, Unfolding Theatre, Live Theatre, Gala Theatre Durham, Ballet Lorent and is also designing for Times Square Panto for the first time this year. Andy is excited to be working with the fantastic team at New Writing North on this show Do Not Enter The Monster Zoo.
Production Manager: Paul Aziz
Paul Aziz is a very experienced Production/Stage Manager, and Prop Maker. His work has included productions for Live Theatre, Gala Theatre Durham, Tyne Theatre, Harrogate Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Soho Theatre London. He has toured extensively both on large and small scale productions the most recent being Beyond the End of the Road for November Club.
Stage Manager: Nicola Morris
Nicola is a freelance Stage Manager and Prop Maker. She trained at Nottingham Trent & The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Throughout her time in stage managament and design she has worked with The Watermill, Nottingham Playhouse, Salisbury Playhouse, Sky Arts Live, Birmingham Rep, RSC, Live Theatre, Tyne Theatre, Gala Theatre, GTSS & Northern Stage. This is her fifth year with New Writing North after her adventures with My Granny is a Pirate, The Worst Princess, Man on the Moon & Hey Presto she’s thrilled to be back with the team on their Monster Adventure.
Stage Manager: Rachel Glover
Rachel is a freelance stage manager, performer and director and has been working in the North East for the last ten years since graduating from Northumbria University. Rachel spent four years as a resident drama worker at Live Theatre directing plays for and by young people, and is now enjoying being back on tour.
